I still cannot work out why yesterday was ‘Good Friday’. To me it was a fairly dull Friday and despite my religious upbringing I fail to see what was good about Friday for Jesus. The actual day celebrates the execution of a Jew (albeit an insightful man… if he actually existed) in an act whose blame has transcended generations to say that those nails were entered by us into the wrists. For our sins we are truly sorry, we gloriously wait unto apocalypse and let the dictatorship continue.
Happy Easter!
Despite my disgruntled personal convictions, this year poses an even more important issue. I never used to care about where I got my chocolate from. To me any ethical issues are immaterial once the product is on the shelf, if I don’t buy it then somebody else will. Of course, these are the thoughts of a man who is mildly addicted to chocolate so you will have to forgive this unethical love affair. In the last few days I have made a decision that gives me peace of mind and promotes my chocoholism into something far more decent. With decorum and a tear, Nestle has been removed from my life. If you want to know why I have given up Nestle then have a look at their history.
If you want to give up Nestle this Easter Nestle UK have kindly provided their extensive product range on their website.
Recently I was required to write an essay discussing social advocacy, using case studies it became clear that Nestle have a very poor track record. Whilst social advocacy for a company can become part of its Corporate Social Responsibility plan, advocacy can also take place through public pressure. There is no doubt that Nestle have been receiving such pressure for a while now. To example this a timeline of the recent Online PR aspects of Greenpeace Vs Nestle Palm Oil fiasco can be found below.
I’m not giving up Nestle because I have decided to plan a massive boycott. I am avoiding Nestle because I don’t feel I can line their pockets with my money to fuel more suffering around the world. Somewhere within that organisation is a grossly fat man, smoking a cigar, whilst gazing out of a window at his empire.
Nestle, if you are reading this, start listening to your customers. Stop using bad PR tactics, sort out all of your unethical habits and be a company who people can be proud of.
